IRW 2001 - Thursday 23rd August, Largs

Prepping at the pad area

As the usual HPR site at Birtlebog farm was out of bounds, we had to use the back up site. This site had been used once before after it was decided that HPR flying was a bit much for the main model flying field at Kelburn! Previous climbers of this hill gave dire warnings, which turned out to be hugely accurate! The trek up the hill involved a car conoy up a dirt track, transfer of heavy equipment to a landrover which made it about 1/3 of the way up the hill proper. After that everything was lugged by hand. The last part was very arduous. Once up there however, the view was spectacular.

VB Extreme 19 - RIP

We had all come to know and love this rocket. Pete W has had the VB Extreme for some time now. He brought it to just about all the rocketry events, checked out the wind, sniffed, and said "not today". But finally this was the day, the conditions were right, there was an RF transmitter available available! There was a Yagi and there was a Scanner. The launch was impressive on a G80. But where did it go? No one really had any idea. We spent hours looking for it and getting false reading from other rockets. In the end we gave up for the day. Pete gave up all real hope and Angela bought him a new G-Wizz to cheer him up. The following Sunday Andy Issot was looking for a different rocket and he stumbled ofver teh VB in the opposite direction to where we had all been looking. The news was bad. There had been no ejection charge in the motor, no deployment, and the Extreme had come in ballistically. Everything was a write off including the G-Wizz and the transmitter.
